Houston, TX, July 4, 2025 – A tragic accident claimed the lives of a man and a woman on Friday evening, July 4, after they were found unresponsive inside a basement wine cellar at a residence on Avalon Place in Houston. At approximately 7:00 p.m., Houston Police Department Central Patrol officers and the Houston Fire Department responded to the home in the 3200 block of Avalon Place after receiving a report of two unresponsive adults. Upon entering the confined wine cellar, first responders discovered both victims deceased. According to preliminary reports, dry ice had been stored in the cellar. As it melted, it released carbon dioxide, which likely displaced the oxygen in the room, creating a dangerous and potentially lethal environment . Authorities believe the man and woman had entered the cellar to check on supplies and were overcome by the buildup of gas. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene and gather further information, but no signs of foul play have been reported.
