Suspect Steals Pickup, Crashes It, Then Attempts Second Car Theft Before Arrest in San Diego
San Diego, CA – May 19, 2025 – A man was taken into custody Monday morning after allegedly stealing a pickup truck, crashing it into multiple vehicles, and attempting to steal another car before being tackled by a bystander in San Diego. The incident began around 7:45 a.m. at Dana Landing, where two men were preparing for a fishing trip at Action Sports Kayak Rental. The owner of a blue Chevy Silverado heard his engine start unexpectedly and saw a male suspect driving away in his truck. The vehicle’s owner and his friend gave chase, with the friend pursuing in another vehicle. The suspect fled the area and entered Ocean Beach. In an attempt to evade traffic at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and West Point Loma Boulevard, he drove the wrong way, crashing into two vehicles and ramming a white truck to get through. He then continued toward the Sunset Cliffs Bridge, but came to a stop due to heavy traffic. The suspect abandoned the stolen truck and fled on foot across the San Diego River, reaching the Marina Village area on Quivara Road. There, he attempted to steal another vehicle from a fisherman. While inside the car and in possession of the victim’s phone, the suspect reportedly said, “I have a gun, give me your keys, I’m on the run.” The fisherman resisted, and a nearby Good Samaritan tackled the suspect and held him until police arrived.
