A tragic single-vehicle crash late Monday night on California State Route 41 near Bear Ridge Road claimed the life of 47-year-old David Winfrey of Morro Bay. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver lost control of his 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser, veered off the roadway, and plunged approximately 350 feet down an embankment before the vehicle caught fire.
First responders located the vehicle in the remote stretch of highway between Atascadero and Morro Bay around 10:45 p.m. The CHP reported that Winfrey was the only occupant of the car, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is unclear whether alcohol, drugs, or mechanical failure were factors
