Modesto, CA, June 9, 2025 – A tragic collision involving an SUV and an Amtrak train claimed the life of one person Monday afternoon in Modesto. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m. on June 9 at State Route 132 just west of Santa Fe Avenue. According to authorities, a Chevrolet SUV driver attempted to go around the lowered railroad crossing arms when the vehicle was struck by an oncoming Amtrak train on the driver’s side. The force of the collision caused the SUV to catch fire. Despite emergency efforts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger on the train sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

MODESTO, CA – A tragic accident claimed the life of a motorist on June 9, 2025, when a Chevy SUV was struck by Amtrak Train 712—traveling from Oakland to Bakersfield—near the intersection of State Route 132 and Santa Fe Avenue at around 1:30 p.m.  According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), warning lights and crossing arms were activated correctly when the driver attempted to bypass the barriers and drive around them. Tragically, the SUV was struck on its left side by the oncoming train. The vehicle was dragged approximately 300 yards and caught fire. Emergency crews pronounced the driver dead at the scene  A passenger aboard the Amtrak train sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. At this time, the name of the deceased driver has not been released, and CHP continues its investigation to understand the decision-making that led to the crash.
