Nipomo, CA – Monday, April 28, 2025 – Two people lost their lives in a tragic head-on crash that occurred Monday evening in Nipomo, according to the California Highway Patrol. The victims have been identified as 70-year-old Fernando Contreras of Santa Maria and 49-year-old Darlene Leticia Scruggs of Nipomo. The fatal crash occurred around 6:27 p.m. in the 1380 block of Orchard Road, near Cherry Blossom Place. Investigators say Contreras was driving a Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Orchard Road when he veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a northbound Toyota RAV4 driven by Scruggs. The force of the impact caused the Silverado to overturn, subsequently striking a BMW that had been traveling behind the Toyota. Both Contreras and Scruggs were pronounced dead at the scene. Details on the condition of the BMW driver have not yet been released.
