Second Victim Dies Following 17-Vehicle Pileup on Highway 99 Near North Avenue in Fresno
Fresno, CA – January 11 – A second person has died following a massive multi-vehicle crash earlier this month on Highway 99 in Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol.The pileup occurred around 9:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 just south of North Avenue. Investigators said dense fog severely reduced visibility, contributing to a chain-reaction collision involving at least 17 vehicles. During the chaos, one driver was struck after exiting his vehicle. That driver was identified as 61-year-old Gustavo Villanueva Vargas of Fresno, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his vehicle later died at a hospital three days after the crash. Family members identified the second victim as Gloria Rodriguez through a GoFundMe page.
