67-Year-Old Man Killed in Suspected DUI Crash at Covert and Toomes Roads in Salida; Driver Arrested
Stanislaus County, CA, July 10, 2025 – A 67-year-old man from Salida was killed early Thursday morning in a suspected DUI hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Covert Road and Toomes Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The fatal collision occurred around 3:41 a.m. CHP investigators say 20-year-old Luis Mercado-Ulloa of Modesto ran a stop sign at the intersection and struck a sedan driven by the victim. The impact forced the sedan off the roadway and into a nearby field.The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Authorities arrested Mercado-Ulloa on suspicion of driving under the influence. Additional charges related to the fatal crash and hit-and-run are expected.
