Santa Cruz County, CA, June 14, 2025 – Authorities have identified 78-year-old Daniel Landry of Santa Cruz as the man who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Saturday night near Scotts Valley that also left four others injured. The fatal incident occurred around 9:55 p.m. on Highway 17 at Sugarloaf Road, according to the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office. Preliminary reports indicate that Landry was inside his Honda Element SUV, which had been stopped on the east side of Highway 17 at a large paved turnout near Sugarloaf Road. For reasons still under investigation, Landry attempted to re-enter the northbound lanes of the highway and collided with a Tesla Model Y, driven by a 19-year-old man from Antioch. The impact caused a chain reaction when the Tesla was rear-ended by a Honda Accord, operated by a 24-year-old Daly City resident.
