Modesto, CA, June 30, 2025– A 63-year-old Modesto man was killed and another driver, identified as Jan Ruff, was injured in a fiery head-on collision Monday night on Highway 49 near Sierra Rock Road. The deadly crash occurred on June 30, when the Modesto man, driving a GMC pickup southbound on Highway 49, crossed over the double yellow line for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado traveling north. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of the GMC was not wearing a seatbelt and became pinned inside the vehicle as it caught fire . Emergency crews arrived at the scene and extinguished the flames, but the man was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.

A tragic head‑on collision occurred Monday night, June 30, 2025, on Highway 49 north of Sierra Rock, claiming the life of a 63-year-old man from Modesto. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving a GMC pickup truck southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, he crossed the double yellow lines and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 70-year-old Jan Ruff. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire. The pickup driver, not wearing a seat belt, was pinned in and died at the scene.
