Spencer Marrujo Dies in Tragic Big Rig Collision on Highway 99 in Atwater

On the night of Tuesday, May 6, 2025, a fatal accident occurred on northbound Highway 99 near Atwater, California, resulting in the death of 27-year-old Spencer Marrujo from Riverside. The incident took place around 10:20 p.m. when Marrujo was driving a 1979 Chevrolet Silverado with a bed-mounted camper. For reasons still under investigation, the camper detached and came to rest in the No. 2 lane of the freeway. Marrujo stopped his vehicle in the same lane and attempted to remove the camper from the roadway. Tragically, a 2023 Kenworth big rig traveling at approximately 55 mph approached the scene. The driver of the big rig was unable to see Marrujo and the camper in time and, despite swerving left in an attempt to avoid a collision, struck both Marrujo and the camper. The impact pushed the pickup truck into another lane of the freeway. Marrujo was pronounced dead at the scene. A 28-year-old woman from Coarsegold, who was also at the scene, sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where she remains in stable condition. The driver of the big rig was treated for minor injuries at a hospital in Merced. Authorities have stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the collision, which remains under investigation.
