Spencer Marrujo Dies in Tragic Big Rig Collision on Highway 99 in Atwater
Atwater, CA. – A 24-year-old man from Inglewood, Spencer Marrujo, was tragically killed in a collision involving a big rig and a pickup truck on Highway 99 in Atwater, authorities confirmed. The deadly crash occurred around 10:20 p.m. on May 6 on the northbound side of Highway 99, just south of Atwater Boulevard, according to the Merced County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office. Marrujo had been driving a 1979 Chevrolet Silverado equipped with a truck bed camper when the camper detached from the pickup and came to rest in the No. 2 lane of the highway. In response, Marrujo pulled over and exited his vehicle to retrieve the dislodged camper from the roadway. As he was attempting to move the camper, a 2023 Kenworth big rig traveling in the same lane approached the scene. The truck driver reportedly did not see the camper or Marrujo in time to stop. Although the driver swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid the collision, the front of the big rig struck both the camper and Marrujo.
