Baldwin Park, CA – June 1, 2025 – A tragic and deadly confrontation unfolded Saturday night in Baldwin Park, claiming the life of a police officer and another man, and leaving a second officer wounded. The suspect, who opened fire on the officers, was also shot and taken into custody, authorities confirmed. Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez delivered the somber news during a midnight press conference, stating, “I have the tragic duty to advise that one of our officers was murdered tonight. Our officer was an amazing man. It’s extremely tragic to have to deal with this.”The slain officer was identified as Samuel Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the Baldwin Park Police Department. Officer Riveros, who was described by colleagues and community members as dedicated and compassionate, was also an avid snowboarder and loyal Dodgers fan who had followed the team across the country.
On the evening of May 31, 2025, Officer Samuel “Sam” Riveros of the Baldwin Park Police Department was tragically killed while responding to a shooting incident in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue. At approximately 7:12 p.m., Officer Riveros and his partner, Officer Anthony Pimentel, arrived at the scene following reports of gunfire and found an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound. As they assessed the situation, they were ambushed by a suspect who opened fire, resulting in a deadly exchange. Officer Riveros was fatally wounded, and Officer Pimentel sustained injuries but has since been released from the hospital. The suspect, an adult male whose identity has not been disclosed, was also shot during the confrontation and is currently in stable condition under custody. The initial victim found at the scene was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation, treating the case as a double homicide. Officer Riveros, 35, was a nine-year veteran of the Baldwin Park Police Department. He began his career as a Public Safety Trainee in April 2016 and was later appointed as a sworn Police Officer. Recently, he had taken on the role of Field Training Officer and was a valued member of the department’s SWAT Team for over five years. Known for his dedication, mentorship, and passion for service, Riveros was also an avid snowboarder and a devoted Los Angeles Dodgers fan.
