2 Killed in Big Rig Crash on I-40 near Crucero Road
A devastating multi-vehicle collision involving several tractor-trailers on Interstate 40 near Crucero Road in Ludlow claimed the lives of two people on Wednesday morning. According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:09 a.m. on the eastbound I-40 in unincorporated San Bernardino County.
Investigators reported that the crash involved three tractor-trailer combination vehicles. Preliminary findings indicate that a female driver operating one of the big rigs failed to slow for stopped traffic ahead, resulting in a chain-reaction collision involving multiple semis.
Authorities confirmed that both the female driver and a male passenger inside the truck sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members.
The violent crash caused major traffic disruptions throughout the morning as emergency crews worked to investigate the scene and clear damaged vehicles from the freeway. A SIG Alert was issued for the area, with traffic backing up for miles while at least one eastbound lane remained closed for several hours. Heavy-duty tow trucks were brought in to assist with recovery operations.
Major freeway crashes involving commercial trucks can have catastrophic consequences because of the immense size and weight of tractor-trailers. Interstate 40 near Ludlow is a heavily traveled freight corridor connecting Southern California with neighboring states, making traffic congestion and sudden slowdowns particularly dangerous for commercial drivers.
Authorities continue to investigate the factors that contributed to the collision, including driver awareness, traffic conditions, vehicle speed, and roadway visibility. Multi-truck accidents often involve complex liability questions and extensive investigations due to the number of parties involved and the severity of the damage.
