87-Year-Old Man Killed in Mobility Scooter Crash
A tragic collision in Irvine claimed the life of an 87-year-old man who was riding a mobility scooter on Thursday night, May 14, 2026. According to reports, the crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Groveland, where a Tesla SUV and the mobility scooter rider were involved in a fatal traffic collision. Emergency personnel from the Irvine Police Department and Orange County Fire Authority responded to the scene and attempted lifesaving measures, but the elderly man was pronounced dead at the location.
Authorities reported that the Tesla driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Preliminary information indicates the Tesla was traveling westbound on Irvine Boulevard with a green signal while the mobility scooter rider was traveling northbound in the crosswalk at Groveland. Investigators stated that DUI is not believed to be a factor, and the Irvine Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to examine the cause of the collision.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Detective Hank Gallegos at the Irvine Police Department. Fatal crashes involving mobility scooters are especially devastating because elderly riders have limited protection when struck by larger vehicles, even at intersections and crosswalks where pedestrians and mobility-device users may be present.
