Daycare Owner Pleads Guilty in 2023 Toddler Drownings Case
San Jose, CA – February 25 – The owner of a San Jose home daycare has pleaded guilty to multiple criminal charges connected to the drowning deaths of two toddlers in 2023, according to reports. Prosecutors said Nina Fathizadeh admitted to charges that include child endangerment stemming from the deaths of 1-year-old girls Payton Cobb and Lilian Hannan at the “Happy Happy Daycare” facility. She is scheduled to be sentenced in May and could face more than 20 years in prison. Authorities said the incident occurred in October 2023 when the toddlers reportedly accessed a swimming pool after passing through a gate that had been left propped open, separating the play area from the pool. A third child was also discovered in the water but survived . Fathizadeh’s mother and daycare co-owner, Shahin Gheblehshenas, has denied wrongdoing and is expected to stand trial, prosecutors said. The case remains ongoing as sentencing proceedings move forward.
